STRIVE program

The STRIVE mentoring program builds confidence in high school students who are the first generation in their family to go to college.
At the beginning of each year new students are admitted to the STRIVE program. The Core Mentor Committee will choose new students in the following priority sequence: Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, Senior. The intent is to bring students into the program who will benefit from the most years of membership possible, including mentor partnership for up to 4 years, and the cumulative general support the program and mentors provide.

“The Funeral Photographer” Movie

The film is called “The Funeral Photographer,” and is written and produced by Mark Strauss, along with a team of passionate creatives who are working on the project including local and regional actors who have been in productions such as Chicago Fire. According to the motion picture website IDMB the storyline takes place, “When Julie steps into a funeral home for what appears to be an ordinary photography job, it will transform what we think we know about love, loss, and remembrance.” |

County Immunization Day

Similar to the National Immunization Days (NID) conducted world-wide by Rotary to distribute the polio vaccine. This project will be in conjunction with the Michigan City Area Schools' (MCAS) Back to School Rally on August 14th.
Working as a subcommittee of the ourshotlpc.org vaccination support group Rotary will be supporting the MCAS, the County Visitors Bureau, HealthLinc Inc. and the La Porte County health department to encourage unvaccinated members of La Porte County to receive the Covid-19 vaccine.

The Beacher

Andrew Tallakson has been the editor of The Beacher Weekly Newspaper since 2013 and before that the entertainment editor at The News-Dispatch for 15 years. In 2013, he was one of four producers on John Hancock’s independent film “The Looking Glass,” and in 2018 performed on piano with LaPorte County Symphony Orchestra. He has served as the musical director for two LaPorte Little Theatre Club shows, “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” and “Little Shop of Horrors,” and plays keyboard at Journey Church, where he is a member. He and his wife, Alice, a kindergarten teacher at Crichfield Elementary School, have a 15-year-old son, Will. They live in Trail Creek. His talk today will focus on The Beacher and its role in the community. |

STEVE SCOTT is the current Artistic Director of the Dunes Arts Foundation, where he has directed past Dunes Summer Theatre productions as The Spitfire Grill, Working 2012, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. For over thirty years Mr. Scott was Producer at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago, where he oversaw well over 200 productions; he is now an Artistic Associate at the Goodman, as well as a member of the Board of Trustees. Over the past fifty years Mr. Scott has directed more than 300 productions for theaters across the United States and internationally, including shows at such Chicago theaters as the Goodman, Northlight, Porchlight, Eclipse, Redtwist, and the Lyric Opera Center for American Artists. For twenty years he has been a member of the faculty at the Theatre Conservatory in the College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University; he has also taught at Columbia College Chicago, Northwestern University, the Theatre School at DePaul University, Loyola University of Chicago and the Latin School of Chicago. He has served on advisory panels for the National Endowment of the Arts, the Illinois Arts Council, the Chicago Office of Fine Arts, Pew Charitable Trusts and United States Artists. For his work, he has received six Joseph Jefferson Award nominations, an After Dark award, Eclipse Theatre’s Corona Award, a special Jefferson Award for career achievement, and the League of Chicago Theatre’s Lifetime Achievement Award. He currently resides in Long Beach, Indiana, and Chicago. |
