Invite your family and friends!
Jul. 11, 2019
Enjoy a picnic at the Barker Mansion garden. Invite your family and friends! In 1968, the Mansion, also known as Barker Civic Center, was presented to the City of Michigan City under terms of a legal agreement between the City and the donor, Catherine Barker Hickox. Her wish was that the Mansion, her childhood home, should be used as a cultural and civic center in memory of her father, John H. Barker. A commission was established to direct the Center’s activities which would include restoration, preservation and documentation of the Mansion and its artifacts. These activities are for the purpose of education, research, and interpretation of the life-style of a wealthy industrialist of the late 19th century for a broad public audience. Such is the background for the evolution of the Barker Civic Center whose specific mission is as follows:

Purdue Extension - Food Insecurity Initiatives
Aug. 08, 2019
Caroline Arnett is the Community Wellness Coordinator at Purdue Extension in La Porte County. She seeks out people and organizations who want to make the healthy choice the easy choice. She has been in Public Health for 4 years, and prior to that worked in sales with an environmental consulting firm and owned her own business in home management. She graduated Indiana University in 2011 with a BA in Mass Communication with a concentration in Public Relations. In 2008, Caroline saw her hometown grocery store close its’ doors during the recession. After researching the social and economic impacts of a community without easy access to a stocked and diverse grocery store, Caroline decided to purse work that would make a change. She has been working within our local communities on creating community engagement and public health initiatives that reduce obesity and diabetes in our communities while strengthening economic resources. |

From Argentina to Teaching to Reaching out for Climate Solutions (past Rotary Exhange student!)
Aug. 15, 2019
I was a Rotary Club high school exchange student in Argentina 50 years ago. The experience had a lasting impact on my life, including my first awareness of environmental issues. The purpose of my presentation will be to: 1) thank Rotarians for the positive effect of their exchange program, and 2) share the story of how my experience in Argentina shaped my career as a teacher and has led to my involvement with Citizens' Climate Lobby, a nonpartisan organization that advocates for a fair and effective transition to a clean energy economy. |
