Candida “Candy” Van Buskirk began her role as principal of Michigan City High School in the fall 2017 semester.
In her almost 20 years of teaching, coaching and educational leadership, Van Buskirk has served as associate principal of Michigan City High School, worked for New Prairie High School as an assistant principal, and at New Buffalo Schools, where she taught biology and chemistry. Her bachelor’s degree is from Bowling Green State University; her master’s in science from the University of Dayton; and her master’s in educational administration from Western Michigan University.
Additionally, Van Buskirk is a two-time All-American basketball player who has coached at both the high school and college levels. Her nonprofit “Coach Candy Basketball Camp” continues to teach participants character, attitude and teamwork.
St. Anthony’s in Michigan City is collecting gently used coats to assist in the Mayor’s coat drive. Sr. Cheryl at the hospital is collecting them in her office. Concord Cleaners has generously offered to clean them for free.
The coats can be dropped off any time through January 15th. If you get them to the front desk, they can get them to Sr. Cheryl. Though, her office is just to the right of the front desk. The Mayor is asking for children and adult sized coats.
The 2017 Ride to End Polio posted another successful year at El Tour de Tucson in Arizona, USA, in November. A team of staff members and Rotary General Secretary John Hewko joined about 120 cyclists from 18 U.S. states and Canadian provinces, Australia, Brazil, Germany, and France, raising a total of $11.7 million for polio eradication after the match by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
Jeffrey Kluger, science editor at Time magazine, recaps the progress made against polio in 2017, and sizes up the hope that it might be eradicated in the coming year. This year-end piece includes quotes from Rotary leaders and staff and attributes the progress of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative to Rotary’s leadership. Pathways to Peace Series: Peace in the Age of Uncertainty
The 21st century has ushered in an era of rapid and at times incomprehensible change. Citizens in communities great and small are living in a near constant state of social, political, economic and cultural upheaval. Simply put, people no longer feel safe and secure in their lives. From crime on the streets of Chicago to human rights violations in Syria and unending war in Afghanistan, people are increasingly convinced that the world is falling apart. The reality is that in many ways, the world is healthier, more prosperous and more peaceful than at any time in history. Thus we face the paradox of a world that is both turbulent and tranquil at the same time. How do we calm the unrest, spread prosperity and show that the world can be, and in fact is, a better place to live?
