Stories
Stepping Stone Shelter
At our March 5th meeting Nanda Danitschek, Executive Director of Stepping Stone Shelter for Women spoke about the shelter's goal of providing those who are victims of domestic violence, services including 24/7 crisis lines & intervention, temporary shelter, clothing & food, transitional housing, counseling, support groups, and advocacy.

Mission
The members of The Stepping Stone Shelter for Women, alert to the problems of domestic violence existing at all socioeconomic levels in American society and, perpetuating itself from generation to generation, associate themselves to work toward its elimination and, in particular, to offer refuge and services to its victims in our area.

Company Overview
The Stepping Stone Shelter for Women, Inc. attempts to respond constructively to the victims of domestic violence and to assist them in living within the community without violence.

Description
It is the philosophy of The Stepping Stone Shelter for Women, Inc. that family violence is a complex and serious problem, not only to the individual family involved, but also for the community. They view the problem as cyclical in nature; the solution requiring that the intervention process be one of education and understanding by each mate as to why the family, as a unit, is in trouble.

Services provided include:
  • Temporary Shelter
  • Clothing and Food
  • Crisis Intervention
  • Legal Advocacy
  • Support Groups
  • One to One Support
  • Rape Recovery Support
  • Essential Transportation
  • 24 hour staffing and hotline.
  • "The Bridge" Transition Housing (details below)
"The Bridge":  Families that have completed their program at Stepping Stone may be eligible to stay in one of their 15 transition apartments. This program allows clients and their children to live on a safe campus in their own apartment while continuing to rebuild their lives. Units include 1, 2, and 3 bedroom apartments.

Celebrate Rotary’s anniversary
Each year, thousands of visitors to Rotary headquarters experience Room 711, a recreation of the office where, on 23 February 1905, Paul Harris met with three acquaintances to start a club based on “mutual cooperation and informal friendship.” Celebrate Rotary’s anniversary by taking a virtual tour of the replica.

How Rotary and Peace Corps work together
As a returned Peace Corps volunteer, Rotarian Maureen Duncan understood the value of reaching out to Peace Corps volunteers to help her district’s project. The project is advancing education and providing economic opportunities for youth in Guatemala. Your club can work with Peace Corps volunteers to identify beneficiaries, assess communities, and involve community members in projects.
Proper use of The Four-Way Test
In his blog post for Rotary Voices, Martin Postic Jr. explains why The Four-Way Test makes a better mirror than window. Postic argues that the test should not be used to put down the opinions of others or defend contentious social issues, but should be used to guide one’s own ethical behavior.
