The Foghorn - March 17, 2020
The Rotary Club of
Michigan City Indiana

Chartered 1916
Given the health concerns surrounding COVID-19, and after discussion with club members, we will be cancelling our Rotary Club meetings for the next two weeks.  This means there will be no lunch meeting on March 19, and no Thirsty Thursday at the end of the month.  At that time, we can reassess and hopefully reinstate our regular meetings.

District 6540 Coronavirus Guidelines
I, on behalf of District 6540 leadership, strongly recommend that our Club Leaders consider suspending meetings and club events until 1 April and then review their club meeting and event status at that time. Some of our clubs have already initiated action to suspend club meeting and events. Please check with your local community health officials for further specific guidance. The state has issued a ban on groups or events over 250 people. We have had one club with a coronavirus infection of one of its members who attended a club meeting before their symptoms were manifested. That individual is recovering now. No one from that club has shown any symptoms of the virus. It is better to err on the side of caution and protect our members, families, and communities.

After speaking with Dr. Wendel McCollum, Associate Superintendent  MCAS, we have decided to postpone the Apple Dumpling Project.  If the situation presents itself to reschedule the program later in the school year, we can do so.

A message from RI President re:COVID-19
Dear fellow Rotarians,

The health and safety of our members are our top priorities. We are closely monitoring the outbreak of COVID-19 (coronavirus disease) and continuously assessing its potential impact on our operations, meetings, trainings, and other events.

Due to the rapidly changing nature of this situation, I encourage you to use your discretion when it comes to club and district meetings and events, and Rotary programs and activities. Canceling or postponing meetings or Rotary-related travel might be appropriate. Even if events are held as scheduled, some people may choose not to take part. And, of course, if the World Health Organization and your national, regional, or local health authorities discourage or prohibit gathering or traveling because of the risk of spreading COVID-19, follow their recommendations.

Check My Rotary for our latest information on COVID-19 and any updates to our travel guidance.

I encourage you, as leaders in your community, to provide whatever assistance your community needs at this time. Contact your local health authorities to learn what your Rotary club can do to help prepare for and respond to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Please accept my best wishes for the health and safety of your family and of all the members of the Rotary family in your area.

Kindest regards,

Mark Daniel Maloney
2019-2020 President, Rotary International

Becoming active peace builders

Rotary’s peace program is expanding, pushing us from the point of being mere advocates for peace to being active and effective peace builders. Canadian Rotarian Chris Offer, a past district governor, writes about the exciting new programs that are making that happen.
