President's Message

Now that 2020 is in the rearview mirror it is time to think about 2021 and the value of being a Rotarian.

The top two reasons people join Rotary are to connect with and give back to their communities. But simply joining isn’t going to change lives or make those connections. That happens when you get involved. You’ll shape your own experience and decide how to get the most out of your membership.

Get involved in ways that align with your passions, and you’ll get much more from your experience.

In the coming weeks I will be discussing ways to increase your involvement in Rotary.  These ways include:

  • Sharing your ideas
  • Finding a mentor
  • Becoming a leader in action
  • Volunteering to help with Club service projects
  • Connecting with the Rotary world
and more.

In the meantime, please attend our online meetings at https://bit.ly/rotary3376mtg and/or by phone at 312-535-8110 access code: 126 188 3153.

Get information about this week's speaker below.

Hope to "see" you there.
Stories
Our January 6th speaker is

Blair Milo
Indiana Secretary for Career Connections and Talent

Blair Milo currently serves as the State of Indiana’s first Secretary for Career Connections and Talent. Appointed by Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb into the position created by Executive Order in August of 2017, Secretary Milo serves as the state’s Chief Talent Officer as Indiana works to fill an estimated one million job openings over the next ten years. She also serves on the Governor’s Workforce Cabinet, a body dedicated to shaping education and workforce training for a 21st Century workforce.

Prior to her appointment to Governor Holcomb’s Cabinet, Secretary Milo served as Mayor of La Porte, Indiana after being first elected in 2011 and reelected in 2015.

Blair will be speaking about the 2021 goals for Indiana's Career Connections and Talent department.
Michigan City Rotary Club gift to Franciscan Health Foundation
will assist with remote monitoring of COVID patients

A gift to the Franciscan Health Foundation’s COVID-19 Preparedness and Response Fund from the Michigan City Rotary Club will help the hospital to remotely monitor discharged patients, assisting their recovery.

The $5,070 donation will cover the cost of 200 pulse oximeters, which will be part of COVID kits sent home with patients who are discharged from the hospital. The kits allow physicians to remotely monitor the vital signs of patients, ensuring that they’re recovering well at home or providing a signal that additional treatment may be needed.

“This (gift) will help us advance our remote patient monitoring efforts greatly,” said Franciscan Health Michigan City President and CEO Dean Mazzoni.

Michigan City Rotary Club President Jim Welborne said the club’s original plan was to donate $3,000 to the fund. The Rotary board decided to cover the full cost of the pulse oximeters in appreciation for the care Franciscan Health Michigan City has provided to the community during the pandemic.

Welborne said when he heard that the remote monitoring equipment could prevent people from going back to the hospital, he knew it was a worthwhile cause. “If we have one patient that doesn’t get worse or doesn’t die, it’s worth it,” he said.

Rotary’s slogan for this year is “People of Action,” Welborne said, reflected in donations like this and activities members do, like bell ringing for the Salvation Army. “I’m proud of the members of the club who are giving their time, talent and treasure to help the community,” he said.
Club seeks nominees for Alinsky Award

The Michigan City Rotary Club is pleased to announce it is accepting nominations for the Paul J. Alinsky Excellence Award during the months of December and January.

This award is presented in honor of Paul Alinsky who was a past Chamber Chairman of the Board, Rotary Club President, and founder of Sentinel Alarm Company. Paul passed away in 1997 and the award was created to keep his memory alive. The award is given annually to a person from the Michigan City community who exhibits dedication to community service and excellence, passion, and innovation in their vocation/career. These are the areas where Paul excelled.

A nomination form is available on the Rotary Club website at www.mcrotary.org and must be returned to Michigan City Rotary Club, PO Box 9372, Michigan City, IN 46361.

Past recipients of this award include Les Radke, Bud Ruby, Duane Mertl, Ron Bensz, Jerry Karstens, Emerson Spartz, Glen Lubeznik, James Welborne, Kathleen Lang, Bernie Scott, Jan Radford, Tom Ringo, Jim Dworkin, Dr. Lisa Hendricks, Marty Corley, Don Babcock, Al Whitlow, Dion Campbell, Cyndi Davis, and Rotary Service Volunteers.  In 2016, in honor of the club’s 100th anniversary, the award recognized every Rotary Club member over the past century.

A memorial inscribed with the names of past recipients is on display at City Hall, located at 100 E. Michigan Blvd., Michigan City.

Jim Welborne, president of the Rotary Club of Michigan City, said, “We are honored to present this award every year to recognize Paul’s legacy as an entrepreneur and a leader in the community. Each year we receive so many nominations for truly deserving individuals and we’re looking forward to recognizing another pillar in our community this year.”

The selection committee will include Rotarians, as well as community leaders outside of the Rotary Club.

A nomination form is available on the Rotary Club of Michigan City website at www.mcrotary.org.  Deadline to submit a nomination is January 9, 2021 and the recipient will be announced on February 11, 2021.

The recipient will be awarded a replica of the Paul Alinsky memorial along with a contribution to a charity of their choice.
