President's Message

April is Professional Development Month here at the Michigan City Rotary Club.

We have scheduled five speakers for the month.

We start with three professors from the Business School at Purdue University Northwest:

  • Jane Shumski Thomas, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Human Resource Management & Organizational Behavior, whose topic is "Learn How to Lead Better Meetings"
  • Anthony B. Sindone, M.A., Clinical Assistant Professor of Finance and Economic Development, whose topic is "Michigan City and the Fourth Industrial Revolution: A Post-COVID future."
  • Anthony James Lenhart, Adjunct Instructor ​teaching Intro to Personal Selling, whose topic is "LinkedIn Do's & Don'ts/Best Practices"
Then we hear from Debbie Tatum, Director of Development for the Franciscan Health Foundation, and Gallup-trained Strengths coach.  She will be discussing the Gallup Strenghts and how they affect your professional and personal life.
 
Last but not lease Suzy Vance and Valerie Mrak from the Michigan City's Toastmasters organization will be talking about how Rotary and Toastmaster are partnering.

Clarence brings a long and proven history of success to the Michigan City, particularly being a change agent, a connector and collaborator. His diverse employment background includes both the public and private sector in the areas of Community and Economic Development, Redevelopment, International Trade, Municipal Management, Real Estate Development and Workforce Development. Clarence journey included stops in North Carolina and Florida and is credited with creating over 30,000+ jobs and $3.5 billion in direct capital investment over the past 25 years.

He has won both state and national awards for his work in the community and economic development arena including International Economic Development Council 1999 national award “Outstanding New Developer of the Year,” Indiana Planning Association winning the 2011 Outstanding Community Initiative Award, 2019 NWI SBDC Small Business Advocate Award, 2019 Indiana Economic Development Association first Shining Star Award and inducted into Purdue University NW Society of Innovators in 2020.

His memberships and community involvement includes Lambda Alpha International-Ely Chapter, Urban Land Institute, International Council of Shopping Centers, Leadership Florida, Leadership LaPorte, Leadership NW Indiana, United Way LaPorte County, Michigan City Chamber of Commerce Board, Dunes Art Foundation Board and Horizon Bank Business Advisory Committee. He recently completed his second term as a board member of the International Economic Development Council and currently a board member of the Mid-America Economic Development Council.

Mr. Hulse earned his BS at Harding University, AR in Public Administration, magna cum laude and an MS in Economic Development from the University of Southern Mississippi. He is also a graduate of the University of Oklahoma Economic Development Institute.

Karen Biernacki, Family Advocates
Family Advocates celebrated its 30th Anniversary last year in advocating for at-risk children and families.
 
The Court Appointed Special Advocate Program began in 1990 and provides screened, trained, and supervised volunteers who speak for the best interest of abused and neglected children in La Porte County.
 
Harmony House is the supervised visitation and safe exchange program that provides safe access for children to continue and build their relationship with their parent(s). Non-custodial parents spend parenting time in a home-like setting where they can experience normal family time. Safe exchanges provide parents in high-conflict relationships an opportunity to exchange their children for weekend visitation without conflict.
 
The Court Youth Advocate and Community Youth Advocate Programs provide screened, trained and supervised volunteers who mentor at-risk youth who are referred either by the courts or schools in La Porte County.

Catherine discusses the inadequate management of wastewater in rural communities, bridging partisan divides, the ways those two topics intersect — and how Rotarians can be part of the solution.
Applications for Peace Fellowships now available
Each year Rotary awards up to 80 fully-funded fellowships for experienced professionals seeking to earn a Professional Development Certificate in peace and development studies. The yearlong program is designed for working professionals and requires 11 weeks of onsite participation. Apply by 15 May!
