Our April 19th speaker is

STEM Coordinator Shelley Deutscher and sixth grade students of Lake Hills STEM Magnet Elementary School.

Lake Hills STEM Magnet School is located within walking distance to Lake Michigan. Lake Hills is STEM accredited by the Indiana Department of Education. The school is currently in the second of a three year partnership with the Museum of Science of Industry. Approximately 500 kindergarten through sixth grade students attend Lake Hills.

The school has become a leader in Michigan City Area Schools in the area of Coding and teaching Computer Science Skills to all of our K-6 students. STEM Celebrations of Learning are held to allow students to share their knowledge of coding with parents and the community.

Code is the list of instructions given to any computer in order for it to perform the desired actions. We live in a world that is becoming more reliant on technology every single day. At Lake Hills we are trying to prepare our students for their future in education and then the workforce.

We are moving

Beginning April 19th The Rotary Club of Michigan City will be moving its meeting location from The Lubeznik Center for the Arts to Patrick's Grille.

We want to thank the Lubeznik Center for hosting us for many years and we will miss being able to view the exhibits during our meetings.

Patrick’s Grille is an independently and locally owned and operated fine dining establishment with a cosmopolitan, yet comfortable, ambiance. Patrick’s Grille was established by local entrepreneur Patrick Wilkins. Native to the region and a Hoosier at heart, Patrick has fine tuned and diversified his palate through his years of travel, and is pleased to bring his favorite cuisine back to Michigan City to share with friends and family.

We will be meeting in the room just to the right as you enter the restaurant.

Patrick's Grille is located South of town on US421at 4125 S. Franklin. St., Michigan City, IN 46360.

New Service Above Self Award

Our club is presenting police, fire and educator Service Above Self awards annually. Thanks to a suggestion from Lance Werner we will know add a JROTC award to the list of awards presented annually.

The award, dating back to 1988, recognizes Rotarians or non-Rotarians who have made significant contributions to the betterment of life in our community.

This year's award will be given to Cadet Gunnery Sergeant Zachery Benedict. Major Tom McGrath, leader of JROTC classes in Michigan City High School, confirmed that Zachary has performed more that 350 hour of community service over the last 3 years.

Zachary is serving on the armed and unarmed basic platoon squad leader and a commander on the armed squad.

Zachary, son of Thomas and Alexandria Benedict, will receive this award at the JROTC awards ceremony to be held at Michigan City High School in May.
