Underwater Search and Rescue Divers

The Michigan City Police Department’s Underwater Search and Rescue Divers (SCUBA Team) consists of 6 divers at this time. All of the members are certified divers, with one also being trained as a dive medic in case injuries or medical injuries occur. They practice twice a month and were diving as late as November this year. Officers volunteer to be on this team and are on-call for water emergencies
Global grant partnership started with a project fair visit
In 2015, Pieter Koeleman from the Rotary Club of Campbell River, British Columbia, Canada, traveled to Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire, for the annual West Africa Project Fair. Throughout the weeklong event, Koeleman was immersed in local culture, visited Rotarian-led service projects, participated in a project, learned about local priorities, and gathered information about projects his club could support. Koeleman also struck up a friendship with the host district’s governor, Marie-Irène Richmond Ahoua, whose passion, vision, and hospitality evolved into a long-term global grant partnership. Building peace through Rotary
According to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, at the end of 2016, 65.6 million people had been displaced by conflict, violence, or persecution. Rotary members refuse to accept conflict as a way of life and are committed to pursuing projects that address its underlying causes, including poverty, inequality, ethnic tension, lack of access to education, and unequal distribution of resources.

Rotary projects often include training that fosters understanding and equips communities with skills for resolving conflicts. During February, Rotary’s Peace and Conflict Prevention/Resolution Month, we can build peace and mitigate conflict:

  • Incorporate conflict resolution and mediation strategies into service projects that involve schools, orphanages, workplaces, and community centers.
  • Support marginalized groups at risk of violence or persecution and provide relief to those who have fled areas of conflict.
  • Participate in fellowship and service activities with Rotary clubs in other parts of the world to promote international understanding.
  • Recruit candidates for a Rotary Peace Fellowship. Up to 100 fellowships are offered annually at Rotary Peace Centers in universities around the world.
Get more ideas by participating in a discussion group, find a project to support on Rotary Ideas, and post our club’s project on Rotary Showcase to inspire others.

Pathways to PeacePathways to Peace Series: Peace in the Age of Uncertainty

The 21st century has ushered in an era of rapid and at times incomprehensible change. Citizens in communities great and small are living in a near constant state of social, political, economic and cultural upheaval. Simply put, people no longer feel safe and secure in their lives. From crime on the streets of Chicago to human rights violations in Syria and unending war in Afghanistan, people are increasingly convinced that the world is falling apart. The reality is that in many ways, the world is healthier, more prosperous and more peaceful than at any time in history. Thus we face the paradox of a world that is both turbulent and tranquil at the same time. How do we calm the unrest, spread prosperity and show that the world can be, and in fact is, a better place to live?
