The Rotary Club of Michigan City congratulates Duane Harrigan who received the Rotary Firefighter Service Above Self award. This award is given in sincere appreciation and recognition for the service and loyalty that individuals have displayed towards the people of Michigan City. As Firefighters their duty is to provide help for the community during crisis. The Michigan City Fire Department personnel are always available and stand ready for duty when called. Firefighters help... to save the lives of the people here in Michigan City and dedicate their lives to the protection of life and property. Today we recognize an individual who is recognized for providing service far beyond the requirements of the position. Driver Operator Harrigan started with the Fire Department in 2007 and prior to the Fire Department he received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Aviation from Lewis University.. Duane joined the United States Air Force in 2003 and is a member of the reserve unit currently as a pilot on the KC-135, in-flight refueling aircraft. Duane has over 2500 flight hours and flown over 800 missions. When Duane was asked why he wanted to become a firefighter he responded" The events of September 11, 2001 created a strong desire/calling to serve and work in a field that would help prevent an event like that from happening again". On the Fire Department Duane stays active learning new ways to improve his fire fighting skills and mentoring younger firefighters. Congratulations to Duane for this outstanding achievement.
Rotary is working with Google’s virtual reality team to offer an experience that showcases the impact of compassion to a global audience. A three-minute virtual reality film that emphasizes the two themes of polio and peace, and how Rotary’s work to eradicate the disease is increasing stability across the world will premiere at the Rotary Convention in Atlanta, Georgia, 13 June.
Through the power of virtual reality, viewers will follow the extraordinary journey of a child whose world has been torn apart by conflict. The film will immerse viewers in this child’s world, and they’ll experience for themselves the impact that small acts of compassion, protection, and kindness can have on others.
Jack Bechaud, a member of the Rotary Club of Lake in the Hills, Illinois, USA, was at a low point when Rotary brought joy back into his life.
