Principal of Michigan City High School

Candida “Candy” Van Buskirk began her role as principal of Michigan City High School in the fall 2017 semester.

In her almost 20 years of teaching, coaching and educational leadership, Van Buskirk has served as associate principal of Michigan City High School, worked for New Prairie High School as an assistant principal, and at New Buffalo Schools, where she taught biology and chemistry. Her bachelor’s degree is from Bowling Green State University; her master’s in science from the University of Dayton; and her master’s in educational administration from Western Michigan University.

Additionally, Van Buskirk is a two-time All-American basketball player who has coached at both the high school and college levels. Her nonprofit “Coach Candy Basketball Camp” continues to teach participants character, attitude and teamwork.

Mayor's Coat Drive
St. Anthony’s in Michigan City is collecting gently used coats to assist in the Mayor’s coat drive.  Sr. Cheryl at the hospital is collecting them in her office.   Concord Cleaners has generously offered to clean them for free.

The coats can be dropped off any time through January 15th.  If you get them to the front desk, they can get them to Sr. Cheryl. Though, her office is just to the right of the front desk.  The Mayor is asking for children and adult sized coats.
Your New Year's Resolution for Rotary
Father, son team up to make a difference

For Tulsi and Anil Maharjan, being in Rotary is about more than just belonging to their local club. The father and son duo have teamed up on multiple projects to help villagers in Nepal recover from the devastating earthquake of 2015. Together, they have discovered how Rotary empowers ordinary people to take action to make a difference.

Pathways to PeacePathways to Peace Series: Peace in the Age of Uncertainty

The 21st century has ushered in an era of rapid and at times incomprehensible change. Citizens in communities great and small are living in a near constant state of social, political, economic and cultural upheaval. Simply put, people no longer feel safe and secure in their lives. From crime on the streets of Chicago to human rights violations in Syria and unending war in Afghanistan, people are increasingly convinced that the world is falling apart. The reality is that in many ways, the world is healthier, more prosperous and more peaceful than at any time in history. Thus we face the paradox of a world that is both turbulent and tranquil at the same time. How do we calm the unrest, spread prosperity and show that the world can be, and in fact is, a better place to live?
